Throughout the three-year program, you will develop solid skills in writing drama for various genres and platforms, while also refining your unique artistic voice. You will receive a comprehensive introduction to dramaturgy, character development, and all the classic elements of dramatic work. Additionally, you will learn to incorporate new tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into your writing process.
All courses and projects provide you with the tools you need as a professional screenwriter/playwright. Our training method for writers is unique in Northern Europe. We base our approach on the leading script development method in the US, Method Acting (more information in a dedicated section) --and as a student in the screenwriting/playwriting program, you will leverage the principles of the Method to improve your writing technique.
A sampling of the courses you will encounter as a student with us include:
As well as an introduction to Acting and Improvisation
The primary course in the program is Practical Scriptwriting, where you will tackle various script challenges and processes, partly in collaboration with the BA in Directing and BA in Acting programs. In this course, we apply theoretical knowledge and creativity in practice through various projects, such as TV series, short films, and one-act plays.
Note: NSKI’s sole focus is on your professional training. There are no general arts classes offered or required in NSKI undergraduate programs.
Throughout the three-year program, the diverse skill set you acquire will enable you to create dynamic stories, qualifying you to work as a screenwriter, playwright, script producer, copywriter, editor, or dramaturg in film, TV, stage productions, and web-based platforms. It will also empower you to create and bring your own projects to life.
Practical Training
The screenwriting/playwriting program offers a four-week internship during the fifth semester (the fall semester of the third year) focused on the area you wish to specialize in, whether it's film, stage writing or TV drama.
In the spring, our second-year students in the BA program for musical theatre, directing, and acting are offered the opportunity to travel to New York to work on a performing arts project with The Cry Havoc Company – one of New York’s oldest and most experienced Off-Broadway theatre groups.
Broadway director Matt Cowart (Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Annie Get Your Gun, etc.) will hold a masterclass/workshop where students will work independently/individually on musical repertoire over several days, receiving continuous and thorough feedback.
The study trip is designed to provide practical experience while offering insight into musical theatre work in one of the largest metropolises for musicals and theatre in the world.
Method Acting is the foundation for all acting work in the musical theatre program at NSKI College. Our musical theatre education places particular emphasis on singing and acting, and it is important to have a solid acting foundation in order to convey performances that are both believable and vibrant. Method Acting is highly regarded and used by some of the most well-known current and former actors in the world, such as Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ashton Kutcher, Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Hillary Swank, Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Heath Ledger, and Marlon Brando.
In short, Method Acting is a unique acting technique developed from Konstantin Stanislavski's system and provides a solid craft for the technical, physical, and emotional aspects of acting. It emphasizes the development of the entire actor’s instrument, including their body, voice, life experiences, and impulses. This allows the actor to create characters, roles, and situations that feel so real that the audience believes in them, relates to them, and is moved by them.
With the rise of streaming platforms and the increasing demand for content production, the need for skilled screenwriters and playwrights is on the rise. This surge creates excellent job opportunities for talented writers.
