As a small school, centrally located in Oslo, NSKI delights in being a safe, creative home for both current and former students.
NSKI is the first school in Scandinavia to use the world-renowned acting technique Method Acting. No other acting technique has won more Oscars. The technique originates from a long series of studies that began with Constantin Stanislavskij in Russia, and further developed at The Actor Studio in New York, by legends such as Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner. It is based on using one's own experiences to understand the characters. Not only do you learn to develop believable and interesting characters, but you learn more about yourself, find your strengths and work on weaknesses. We do this by focusing on the playfulness and impulses that are already built into us.
At NSKI, we use these techniques, through, among other things, sensory work and improvisation, where the students learn to use these acting techniques in a collaborative and inspiring work environment.
As we are located in the center of Oslo, we have close ties to both film, television, musical theater and the theater industry.
With close follow-up by NSKI's skilled teachers, as well as guest teachers, we focus on education and specialized knowledge rather than performance. Students are also visited by casting directors and have classes in industry knowledge and auditioning techniques. With this, we prepare students to become strong, independent actors ready to tackle what the industry has to offer.
NSKI offers several unique experiences.
We offer an exchange to South East Missouri State University, where students get to study on campus in the USA and work on big stages in a new and exciting environment.
In addition, we offer a trip to New York, where students gain experience with the industry outside of Norway as well. Students get to work with Broadway directors, see performances, as well as put up scenes and monologues in collaboration with an Off-Broadway theater group.
"Now I understand what it means to be a professional actor.... I have rarely met such prepared actors and performers as during the trip to New York." - a student after his stay in New York.
Everyday life at NSKI runs regularly from 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, where the first half is aimed at the technical work with classes such as movement, voice, sensory work with relaxation and theory teaching. After lunch, the students work on projects, such as film projects and scenes from plays.
Due to NSKI's special educational offer, students get a unique opportunity to collaborate across their study programs. Thus, the acting students get to do collaborative projects with the other lines such as scriptwriting and directing. This gives them a unique opportunity to work on a professional level with film and theater projects, while learning cooperation and communication with the other students.
Once a week, students get time for independent work, class meetings and student council, and more.
