About the school

In NSKI University College's historic building, centrally located in Oslo, we focus on creating a creative and safe working environment, where students can explore, play and practice their ideas.

NSKI has a good symbiosis between theoretical understanding and practical work. In this way, the students learn to use the theory teaching in the practical film work.

Students not only learn technical subjects such as camera work, post-production and lighting and sound engineering, but also how to tell emotionally charged and meaningful stories, with a particular focus on film.

Through collaboration across the study programs, visits from professionals in the industry and with close follow-up from the teachers, the students get everything they need to tackle the film and theater industry.

As a student

Because of NSKI's small classes, each directing student gets the chance to make their own films with good supervision from our talented teachers.

Our focus is on the creative content and communication between actor and director. The students get a unique opportunity to work with the students from the acting program and therefore a lot of experience in personal instruction.

The students get plenty of training in the use of visual tools such as lighting, camera angles, themes and sound, with a focus on storytelling. In addition, they also get to participate in acting classes. In this way, they gain experience from several points of view, learn to practice text analysis and facilitate the collaboration between director and actor.

At NSKI, we prioritize practical work. Practice makes perfect, after all. Therefore, the students get plenty of quantitative training, where they learn to become comfortable in their leadership position and express their ideas, with close follow-up from the teachers.

In collaboration with the acting and script department, the directing students get the opportunity to practice their work and work in a safe and creative collaborative environment. This collaboration allows students to set up screenings and create film projects at a professional level.

Unique experiences

NSKI is one of the few universities in Norway with a pure directing education. Combined with the opportunity to work both with scriptwriting and acting students, NSKI provides a distinctive education unlike other schools in Norway. In this way, we prepare the students to deal with the film, TV and theater industry both in and outside of Norway.

We also work to give students the opportunity to travel to New York, where they can visit theater groups, learn from professionals in the industry and make their own short films, with New York as a background.

Everyday life

As a directing student, you mainly work from 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday. In the morning, we work with subjects such as storytelling, camera work, script analysis, as well as acting classes. Here, students get the chance to learn about filming, visual aids, editing, post-production and film history.

In the afternoon, the students get the chance to develop their own projects. In the project work, the students get plenty of hands-on training, where they get to practice the theoretical work. All this is done with a thorough review and feedback from the teachers, so the students feel seen and supported throughout the process. By repeating this process, the students get their work automated, so they become confident and comfortable as directors. This comprehensive training helps to create skilled, independent directors, ready to take over the Norwegian film industry.
